【GD Today】FAH-SYSU hosts 2025 Pacific-Rim Conference on healthcare innovation

2025-09-29

From September 26 to 28, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) jointly organized the 2025 Pacific-Rim Conference on Healthcare Innovation with the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). The theme of the conference was "Next-Generation Healthcare Innovation in Robotic Surgery and Translational Research for Precision Medicine." Experts and representatives from leading academic institutions and medical organizations around the world gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge developments and future trends in the medical field. In his opening speech, President Xiao Haipeng of FAH-SYSU stated that the conference directly addresses major challenges faced by health systems worldwide: population aging, the rising burden of chronic diseases, emerging infectious disease threats, health risks linked to climate change, and persistent regional imbalances in medical resources.

He mentioned that FAH-SYSU and UC Berkeley jointly established China's first international robotic surgery training center in 2023. To date, the center has successfully conducted 22 rounds of specialized team training, significantly enhancing the practical skills of participating medical staff in robotic surgery. Beyond robotic surgery, FAH-SYSU continues to advance talent cultivation and scientific research cooperation in the interdisciplinary fields of health science and AI. Since the launch of the Health Data Science and AI Training Program in 2020, the annual international workshop now enrolls about 400 participants and brings together over 50 internationally renowned scholars, continuously driving educational innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Regarding the development of domestic surgical robots, President Xiao introduced that these robots have achieved remote medical capabilities. Doctors can remotely operate robots to perform surgeries for patients in local areas, enabling those in remote regions to access high-quality medical services from first-tier cities without long-distance travel.Additionally, domestic orthopedic simulation surgical robots have been developed and applied, providing doctors with a highly realistic training environment and facilitating the promotion of techniques. In cross-regional cooperation and international exchanges, relevant medical institutions have actively promoted technology sharing. They have engaged in collaborations on surgical robots and AI-assisted medical care with Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Southeast Asian countries like Laos. Through equipment donations and personnel training, advanced medical technology services are becoming available to more regions.

The event also unveiled the official establishment of the FAH-SYSU Leadership Academy. "Faced with numerous challenges in the global health sector, we urgently need exceptional, innovative, and cross-cultural leadership as a core support," President Xiao said.
